VHF Radio Operator Certificate (Maritime)

Overview:

The ROC-M provides instruction for emergency radio procedures, everyday operation and the Restricted Operator;s Cerficate (Maritime) card. Topics include:

  • the uses of marine VHF radios
  • choice of frequencies
  • phonetic alphabet
  • procedural words and phrases
  • Digital Selective Calling features
  • Introduction to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, (DSC/GMDSS). 

Vancouver Sailing Club

The ROCM is mainly intended for pleasure boaters that do not fall within the scope of Transport Canada’s Ship Station (Radio) Regulations, 1999. Industry Canada delegated the examination and administration of the ROC-M certification program to Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS). The Vancouver Sailing Club is associated with CPS as an official Instruction and Examination partner.

Application for this certificate is prepared by the Vancouver Sailing Club following your successful  passing of the examination. The Certificates are issued by CPS. and are valid for life. There is no renewal requirement. No photograph of the holder is required, and there is no age or nationality restriction.

All mariners that own and use VHF radios aboard or ashore must earn this Certificate. It's the Law.

Availability:

Year-round as a course offered during VSC Cruise & Learn and Mileage Builders

Self-Paced Format:

We include a pre-course study package with CD to prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) with DSC Endorsement exam. We also include drop-in evening for reviews and examinations.

Practical instruction can be taken on our 5 and 7-day Cruise & Learn and Cruising Mileage Builders Adventures.

$195 including CPS precourse study materials, Instructor review and examination.
