FAQ http://vancouversailingclub.com/about/faq/index.html Mon, 23 Oct 2017 00:52:36 -0700 en-gb How do I get involved with racing at the VSC? http://vancouversailingclub.com/about/faq/how-do-i-get-involved-with-racing-at-the-vsc.html http://vancouversailingclub.com/about/faq/how-do-i-get-involved-with-racing-at-the-vsc.html
All of these activities are structured to create an environment where crew develop as competent speed contributing members of a team on keelboats from 24-45 feet . All members learn the roles and responsibilities of the 7 crew positions (Foredeck, Mastman, Pit, Cockpit Trimmer 1, Cockpit Trimmer 2, Mainsail Trimmer and Helm.

Each student selects a primary and secondary position to specialize in during races and understands the seamanship and teamwork required to move the boat efficiently at the START, Upwind Leg, Windward Mark, Downwind Mark, Leeward Mark and FINISH line.

All of the above is delivered by our 10 session VSC504 Competent Keelboat Racing Crew Course. The race venues are English Bay, Howe Sound, the Straits of Georgia, gulf Islans and Deep Cove. Additional clinics in Advanced Downwind and Advanced Upwind Sailing are delivered by proven race winning skippers and sailing professionals. Race Strategy and Tactics are developed with local knowledge of weather, winds, currents and geography for each of the 5 races included in the Course.

The best time to start is when you have completed at a minimum VSC101 Qualified Crew ( better would be VSC203 Day Skipper) and can participate in 10 weekend days of training within a 6 month window.

Completion of VSC504 is required to crew on our boats in the BVI Race Week (April), Vic- Maui (June), Antigua Race Week (March) and VanIsle 360 (June) races.

Racing is fun, challenging and rewarding. Call Carl Richardson (604) 805-9944 if you would like to learn more or enrol in the VSC504 program.]]>

Are there any advantages in taking the 3 courses over three weekends in the summer? http://vancouversailingclub.com/about/faq/are-there-any-advantages-in-taking-the-3-courses-over-three-weekends-in-the-summer.html http://vancouversailingclub.com/about/faq/are-there-any-advantages-in-taking-the-3-courses-over-three-weekends-in-the-summer.html
However, students that complete 3 week-ends within a six- month period usually do pass the practical requirements for Bareboat Certification. It is important for students to sail in between their weekend courses to practice their seamanship and boat handling skills. Sailing for a day at least once a month is recommended. Our club sails on our J24 and Beneteau's Friday, Saturday and Sunday Evenings are an excellent way of developing/ refining your skills and are very affordable.

We offer VSC101 Qualified Keelboat Crew and VSC203 Day Skipper courses at least once a month on weekends. We offer VSC204 Bareboat Cruising Certification every 8 weeks. Also, you are likely to sail in 3 different cruising areas- English Bay, Indian Arm and Howe Sound to provide variation in sail planning and navigation.]]>

A few students cannot be away for 7 consecutive days for various reasons and prefer to take courses on the weekend. If the Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising and Bareboat Chartering courses are taken weekends within 3 months and augmented by casual sailing or racing at least monthly, students will likely acheive all their certifications and have a entries in your Log Book for qualifications for your first charter.]]>

During the winter months (November – February) winds are generally higher and we do experience infrequesnt seasonal gales. Because we are located on the Geogia Strait which is 100 NM long by 20 NM wide you can get a taste of real ocean sailing at times.

We teach our students how to prepare themselves and their boat for safe open ocean sailing. In our sailing area, there are many protected areas, which allow for sailing in calmer winds and seas.]]>

Although it's very rare that students get seasick during instruction, we have found the Seaband - wrist bands are very helpful in preventing queasiness. They are sold on the Internet, in any drug store or West Marine Products Store(http://www.westmarine.com). Cost is under $10.00. There is another sea band worn on the inner wrist, called the nausea-quelling ReliefBand ($60.00; Relief Band). It helps avert motion sickness by emitting gentle electrical signals that interfere with nerves that cause nausea. It's reusable and side effect free. We've seen it work well for many students especially those prone to motion sickness.]]>

Note: Private Charters workout well BUT we have found that you learn alot through other students' questions and challenges. The cabins aboard the Beneteau's are comfortable and all common areas are kept clean and organized as part of the learning experience. Cooking/BBQing with 3-4 other students is alot of fun- the ingredients are fresh and generous. On many of our Cruise & Learns people/ couples have met and become very good friends and cruise together regularly.]]>
